Another interesting exhibit
Well, if you missed the Arndt exhibit reception at the MIA, here's another. Thursday, March 5 at the CVA gallery, featuring sculpture and photography! Of note: Temple of David by Robert Polidori, and other images by Annie Liebovitz and someone I'm not familiar with, Sebatio Selgado. The works are on loan from the Museum Louvre It Or Leave It, a collectors personal art outreach from Gary and JoAnn Fink.

Tom Arndt's Minnesota \ Main Street Photographer
Photo exhibit heads up! Nice article this Friday AM (page E8 Variety section ART) in the Star Tribune on Tom Arndt exhibit which opens at the Harrison Photography Gallery at the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, that starts tomorrow! There is a reception tonight (check the MIA link) and you can meet the artist! Drat, I can't make it! Tom Arndt practices street photography at its finest. No wonder he mentions Helen Levitt, (one of my favorites) as an influence. The great quote of his, from the Star Trib article: I'm real chaotic. Whatever is out there I will photograph if it has
meaning to me. As a documentary street photographer, I don't go out
there to impose my will. You have to accept the chaos and opportunity
of whatever is there.

You Tube, of course! Take a trip down memory lane and look at the proto-web world of the 1980's. I know! I was there. YouTube is the odd historical subconscious sphere of all that ever saw the light of some kind of media generation device. So, it is a massive reservoir of humble beginnings. I worked at KRON in San Francisco in the 80s when they were a real NBC affiliate and an FCC broadcast license, was truly a license to print money! And I was in an internet news start up too! More on that some other time. Please, just don't look at this one clip, check out the others. . .

You see kids, don't play with fireworks! The Rem Koolhaas CCTV building in Bejing goes up in flames before it even opened. There's a gazillion videos out there (surprized?) Of note though : his Prada Store in NYC went up in 2006.

Why are architects so obsessed with schools and rules?
Is the title of an interesting and provocative article by Witold Rybczynski in a recent online issue of Slate (he's the architecture critic there). One of the great quotes : "Most designers tend to develop a relatively narrow language of
architectural forms, materials, and details—minimalist or articulated,
light or heavy, purist or traditional, technological or
hand-crafted—and stick to it." The point is alas, that he notes that architecture is a zero-sum game, so dogma and consistency often prevail. I would add that the seeming lack of more imaginative or innovative ad-hoc approaches occurs because the designer (alas again) is compelled to become a 'brand.' Eclecticism anyone?
50mm : imaging panacea
One of the total unsung heros of the glass world, should be in every photographer's bag. And here's a good overview of why the 50mm lens does the trick, in so many circumstances.
