Persepolis, oh Persepolis. . .
Considering my 15 years in broadcast news, and all the awfulness I saw that never made air, I can only look at the stills of the Iranian uprising. I can't bear to watch the video just yet. I watched a blu-ray version of Persepolis, and have to say, it offers a great summation, a great back-grounder on what's happening. In vivid gray scale, through the eyes of one person, Marjan Saptri, it lays out the history of the past few decades in Iran. It is crucial, compelling and awe-full. beyond Ikea! Oh those young Spanish designers indulging in such heresy! Design which does not make more stuff, but is based on re-use. What? Not make more stuff! I never. It figures that Barcelona would be home to Makea, but for the English speakers/readers, see the Treehugger.com article, as I don't see an English side to the Makea site.

I'm finding the whole situation in Iran wrenching. At least the wearing of green has been improved for me. I won't simply associate it with ritual drunks on St. Patty's day. Via a tip at Andrew Sullivan's blog, this fascinating piece of interactive digital art from NeoFormix. Again I think about digital vs analog; how will we keep hold of these bits of history when digital media goes through regular paroxysms, moultings, so various constructions are lost. A recent cover of New Yorker shows an alien reading a book in the ruins of NYC, sitting on a heap of LCDs, CDs, iPods, DVD player, Kindles, etc. All this after seeing a restored version of Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451, whew, I have concept fatigue.

I recently have been thinking more and more in black & white. I grabbed this during a wedding shoot at the Guthrie in Minneapolis. Mind you, only one part of the image is an actual view. I will do a separate post for another one I did on a summer's eve walk.
another 50th !
hmmmm, one must be getting on when 50th anniversaries of this and that mean something. So besides the Guggenheim 50th, a great musical one! It's the golden anniversary of Dave Brubeck's jazz classic Time Out l.p. M'gosh, at least vinyl is making a limited comeback, at least for a few. Brubeck's 89 and he's still pluggin'! the Guggenheim at 50 years
A lot of writing on the Guggenheim for the 50th Anniversary. The New Yorker but also a good one at The Daily Beast. A very nice image gallery too at the DB. As is to be expected, Frank Lloyd Wright is front and center in these tales. The New Yorker essay ends with the quote - You’re not sure whether the curators are jousting with Wright or protecting him, but there isn’t a moment when you are not aware of, and reacting to, his space. This is exactly how he wanted it. But if you ever want to see the Guggenheim used as the location for a shoot 'em up, well you're going to have to see The International.
